Worlds of Opportunity Career Expo
September 29-30, 2010
G
reater Gulf  States Fairgrounds - Mobile, AL

The Construction Industry will be a featured "World" as part of this Annual Career Expo which will be held September 29th and 30th at the Greater Gulf States Fairgrounds in Mobile.

Over six thousand (6,000) eighth grade students, teachers, school administrators, parents, industry leaders and volunteers will be invited to  the Fairgrounds in Mobile, Alabama for the first annual “Worlds of Opportunity” Career Expo.  The purpose of the Expo is to create awareness about career options among students and educators while addressing workforce needs in the region. This expo, a project of the Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council (SAWDC), will be a fun, educational, hands-on opportunity for students to become familiar with a broad overview of jobs available in our area.  Attendance to the expo will be available to students from our eight county workforce development region which includes Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Escambia, Mobile, Monroe, and Washington Counties.

The “Worlds of Opportunity” Expo includes the following industry sectors which are being referred to as Worlds:

  • Safety

  • Energy

  • Construction – Industrial, Commercial, Residential, and Highway

  • Architecture and Engineering

  • Maritime

  • Aerospace

  • Manufacturing:  Paper, Chemical, Steel, Process

  • Health Care

  • Public Services

  • Communications

  • Auto Technology

Business and industry leaders, workforce development and career center representatives, along with school representatives are collaborating and partnering to introduce this event to our region.  A hands-on event of this type and magnitude has never been held in Alabama.

We hope to have several exciting hands-on exhibits along with large equipment  to attract students to our “World”. We will be competing with Aerospace who will have a plane; Maritime who will have a mock up of half a ship (and who is giving away Hard hats and safety glasses to each student visiting their world); and Energy who has several fun, hands on events planned.

If you are interested in donating a piece of equipment  or an operator to demonstrate the equipment;  if you have other ideas, or  know someone who can volunteer to help at the event, please contact Charlotte Kopf at 251-344-8220.  We will need over 300 volunteers to help throughout the event.

The “World of Construction” is seeking equipment for display at this event.  We are also seeking ideas for hands-on demonstrations for carpentry projects.

We hope you will join with AGC in promoting the Construction Industry at this event.  We need Volunteers to help.......for more information contact Charlotte Kopf at
251-344-8220.

Appreciation is extended to all who have already pledged their support for this event.
